Military honors are awards given to active duty or retired soldiers, during their lifetimes or posthumously, to recognize exceptional conduct. They may also be awarded to civilians in certain contexts, but this is rare and the most prestigious awards are exclusive to the military. This can be for bravery on the battlefield, recognition of exceptional service over an extended period, other unique contributions etc.
For example:
• the Nishan-e-Haider, the highest honor for acts of bravery, awarded only posthumously
• Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Military (not to be confused with the civilian award of the same name) “Awarded to colonel & above, for excellence of work/spontaneous meritorious service or on completion of 18 years of service”
• Purple Heart (US military) for being wounded or dying in battle. Can be awarded multiple times to the same person.
• Nishan-e-Shujaat, awarded for military and civilian acts of acts of conspicuous gallantry, which are not always in the face of the enemy
